Kelvin is a unit of measurement for the colour spectrum. Lower numbers on the scale correspond to colder colours such as blues and purples, while higher numbers indicate warmer colours such as reds and yellows.

Kelvin is often used to measure the colour temperature of light sources, such as lamps and LEDs. The colour temperature of a light source can be affected by its type, how it is made, and the surrounding environment. For example, incandescent bulbs tend to have a lower colour temperature than fluorescent bulbs. Light sources with a high colour temperature are said to be “cool” (5000K), while those with a low colour temperature are “warm.” (3000K)

A lumen is a unit of measurement for the amount of light emitted by a light source. It is often used to measure lamps’ brightness and other illumination sources.

Watts is a measure of power or the rate at which energy is used. So, a light with a higher wattage will use more energy and be brighter than a light with a lower wattage. However, modern lighting, including LED lighting, can produce more lumens with less power. Thus, lumens are a better measure for LED lighting.

An IC rating measures a material’s ability to withstand an electric current. The higher the number, the better the insulation. Materials with an IC rating of 4 or higher are typically used for electrical insulation. For example, if your downlight is abutted up to or covered with insulation in the ceiling, you must use IC Rated Downlights.

An IP rating, or Ingress Protection rating, measures a material’s ability to protect against water and dust. The higher the number on the scale, the better the protection. If you want to place LED lighting outside, we recommend a rating of IP44 or higher.

The Colour Rendering Index (CRI) measures how accurately a light source can render colours. The higher the CRI, the more accurate the light source is. LED lights typically have a CRI of 80 or higher, while incandescent bulbs have a CRI of just 10-20.

Many of the lights Emotive Earth sells have CRI’s in the 90s, meaning they’re incredibly colour-accurate.

The guide concludes by summarising the benefits of LED lighting encouraging buyers to make informed decisions when purchasing LED products by considering quality, performance, and compliance with standards.

What are the benefits of using LED lighting?

LED lighting offers numerous benefits, including energy efficiency, longer lifespan, lower heat emissions, and reduced environmental impact. They consume up to 80% less energy than traditional incandescent bulbs and can last up to 25,000 hours, making them a cost-effective choice for both residential and commercial use.

How do LED lights compare to traditional incandescent bulbs?

LED lights are significantly more energy-efficient than traditional incandescent bulbs, consuming less power while providing the same brightness. They also have a longer lifespan, reducing the frequency of replacements. Additionally, LEDs emit less heat, making them safer and more efficient in terms of energy use.

Can LED lights be used for outdoor lighting?

Yes, LED lights are suitable for outdoor lighting applications. They are durable, weather-resistant, and capable of withstanding various environmental conditions. Many outdoor LED options also come with features such as motion sensors and smart technology, enhancing security and convenience.
